What Do You Wear for a Spray Tan?

1024 683 Sarah Rubino

Ok so you’ve booked your first spray tan (or maybe you haven’t yet), but there’s still one looming question: What do you wear during your spray tan session??

To be honest, this is a very easy question to answer, though we get asked it a lot. It’s really not complicated because it’s as simple as this: you can wear whatever you want.

You can go topless during your session

Many women choose to go topless during their spray tan session for the sheer convenience of what we all try to avoid when tanning: tan lines. Tan lines around your bra area can be a definite issue when you’re wearing certain outfits that might dip lower in the front or back, exposing your obvious lines. And it’s for this reason that topless is one of the most popular options for women when getting a spray tan.

You can wear a bathing suit (or undies!) during your spray tan

Another great clothing option worn by both men and women during a spray tan session is choosing to wear a swimsuit.

If you know you are going on vacation and will be practically living in one particular swimsuit, bring it in and we’ll spray you in it! And no worries about the solution getting on your suit, it will wash right off once you put it in the washer!

As a side note: wearing a bra and panties are also completely acceptable. A lot of women would rather get tanning solution on their undies versus their brand new swimsuit, so that’s another option we see a lot, which is totally fine! We also offer disposable strapless bras and panties if you did forget to bring your own and wanted to wear something to cover up.

You can go NUDE during your session… we don’t care!

The final option for what to wear during a spray tan is choosing to go completely nude. Now, we know this gives a lot of people anxiety. They might want to go to ‘no tan lines’ route but are scared about exposing themselves to a complete stranger, so we just want to tell you right now: We don’t care. We’ve seen it all, it’s a part of the business, and we truly don’t even think twice about it… so if you really want to go nude during your spray tan appointment, please don’t let your insecurities get in the way!

As far as tanning nude goes, we also want to mention that the FDA does recommend you take the following protective measures during your spray tan session. Those measures are: use of protective undergarments, using protective eyewear, using nose filters, sealing lips with lip balm. These measures are, again, protective and necessary for everyone to be aware of, however, you are, of course, able to make your own decisions thereafter.

And as for the Men…

Don’t worry fellas we didn’t forget about you! A lot of men that come to see us also struggle with the question of ‘what to wear during a spray tan?’ so we wanted to make sure to address your side of the question, as well.

Men can wear underwear, swim trunks, or take advantage of our complimentary disposable boxers that we have in our studio! Again, it’s really up to your personal preference.

The Bottom Line is: It’s Up to You!

At the end of the day, as a spray tanning business, our job is to make our clients feel as comfortable as possible. We want you to absolutely love the experience of getting a spray tan, not fear it or feel anxious about it. So whatever makes you feel the most at ease is what we want you to wear during your session! Happy Tanning!

What are ‘Parabens & Sulfates’ and Why are They Bad for my Spray Tan?

1024 820 Sarah Rubino

Okay, so if you’ve ever gotten a spray tan before, you’ve surely heard all the buzz about ‘paraben-free’ and ‘sulfate-free’ … but what exactly do these buzz words mean? This is SUCH a good question that hardly ever gets answered. However, today you’re in luck because we are about to finally give you all the answers you’ve been looking for!

What are Parabens and Sulfates?

Parabens are chemicals that act as preservatives and can be found in most beauty products. They were invented to prevent bacteria in products such as deodorants, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, body washes, etc. Parabens are most commonly used to preserve the shelf-life of these beauty products.

Sulfates are a form of salt from sulfuric acid. Sulfates are commonly known to as cleaning/foaming agents and are normally found in toothpaste, body washes, shampoos, and conditioners. Yes, sulfates are what enables products to “foam” or “lather” more easily.

Why are They Toxic for a Spray Tan?

While there are many reasons that experts have found parabens and sulfates to be harmful to daily health (that’s another blog post for another time), we want to avoid them because they have been found to very easily strip a spray tan!

These harsh chemicals can smudge, strip, or streak a tan… all of which are huge no-no’s! If you’re looking to increase the life of your tan, we HIGHLY recommend seeking alternative beauty products post-spray tan!

What Products CAN I Use?

At Bronze Beauty Spray Tanning, we have a multitude of product options for you to purchase before you even leave our studio! Some of our all-time favorites are: Sunstyle Catwalk Body Wash, Sunstyle Catwalk Sunless Tan Extending Lotion, and AYU Moisturizing Lotion. All of these options are sulfate-free & paraben-free, smell heavenly, and can extend the life of your spray tan for up to 10 days!

So what are you waiting for? Now that you know what parabens and sulfates are, you can educate yourself when you’re shopping for your new fav post-tan products! The more organic the product, the better it is for your spray tan! Happy tanning!

How to Maintain your Spray Tan on Vacation

1024 578 Sarah Rubino

Going on vacation and thinking about getting a spray tan? We vote yes! Not only does it take the pressure off of laying out, but you feel more confident, skinnier, and all-around better with a little extra color. However, in order to make your vacation tan worth your while, here are a few tips on how to maintain your spray tan while you’re on vacation:

Don’t Shower Right Away

After your initial 8-10 hours of waiting post-spray tan to shower, do a quick warm water rinse (no soap!) and then… wait it out. We know this sounds crazy, but wait as long as you can to shower with soap, within reason of course! The less often you shower and scrub your body with soap, the longer it will take for your spray tan to fade.

Use Sunscreen

We can’t emphasize this enough!! Not only is sunscreen extremely important for the health and wellness of your skin, but it also serves as an excellent barrier cream between your spray tan and chlorinated pools and salt water! If you’re planning on taking a dip in any pool or ocean while you’re on vacation, you definitely want to apply sunscreen generously on top of your spray tan. You won’t regret it!

Don’t Shave Often

If you’re looking to maintain your spray tan on vacation, try your best NOT to shave every day. Shaving is a mild form of exfoliation and fades your spray tan little by little every time you do it. You definitely want to keep in mind to do as much hair removal as possible BEFORE your spray tanning session, so you don’t have to worry about shaving (or waxing) as much post-spray tan.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!!

As I’m sure you’ve heard us say a thousand times before, a good moisturization ritual is the KEY to maintaining your spray tan – and being on vacation is no exception! Moisturize day and night and you’re sure to maintain your spray tan throughout your vacation!

Use the Right Shower Products

If you finally decide you need to break down and shower (LOL) then the least you can do is use the right products! Paraben-free and sulfate-free products are a MUST post-spray tan. At Bronze Beauty Spray Tanning, we carry large bottles, as well as travel-sized bottles of all our favorite spray tan safe body washes. Next time you’re in our studio, make sure to check out our product wall, and you’ll be on your way to maintaining your spray tan on vacation!

We hope this list of tips and trips gives you a good idea of what to do to maintain your spray tan on vacation. As always, let us know if you have any further questions or concerns. Happy Tanning!

How to Shower After a Spray Tan

1024 683 Sarah Rubino

How to Shower After a Spray Tan

To shower, or not to shower, that is the question! Everyone always worries whether or not they should shower, how often, if showering is even recommended, etc. The good news is… you can shower with a spray tan! However, there do exist some easy tips and tricks to make your shower work with (instead of against) the life of your spray tan:

Don’t Shower for 8-10 Hours.

This rule applies to getting a regular solution spray tan (as opposed to a rapid solution spray tan, in which the wait time is 2-5 hours). After your session, you’ll want to wait a minimum of 8-10 hours before hopping in the shower. If you leave your tan on longer than that, even better! The maximum amount of time you want to leave the solution on your skin, however, is 24 hours. The longer you leave the solution on your skin, the more time it has to develop, giving you the best results.

First Shower = Warm Water Rinse.

The very first shower you should take after your spray tanning session should always be a simple warm water rinse! Yup, that’s right, no soap, body wash, hair washing, shaving or scrubbing. If you use soap before the 24-hour mark, you will stop the development of the spray tan, and will not achieve the best results. You’ll want to simply hop in the shower, and rinse off the cosmetic bronzer that is the top layer of your spray tan. And remember, it’s okay if you want to use your hands to rub, but do so very gently!

Use Paraben-Free & Sulfate-Free Products.

Another key factor to showering post-spray tan is to use products that are paraben-free, sulfate-free, and free of any alcohols or dyes that may dry out your skin. If you are interested in reading more on what types of products we recommend, check out our blog post on the best products to use after a spray tan: http://bronzebeautyst.com/2018/09/19/the-best-post-spray-tan-products/

Always Pat, Never Rub.

The last important tip to remember when showering post-spray tan is to always pat yourself dry. The gentler you are with your skin, the better! Scrubbing or rubbing too hard can not only smudge your tan, but erase it completely, so we always advise against that.

Remember, there is absolutely no reason to be afraid of showering after you get a spray tan, as long as you follow these quick, easy steps! Happy tanning!

How To Get a Spray Tan Off:

1024 683 Sarah Rubino

How To Get a Spray Tan Off:

We get asked this question frequently, and it’s one that a lot of long-time spray tan clients don’t even know themselves. It’s a tricky question, honestly, and we’ve heard of many ways people have tried to get spray tans off. Some ways work, and some don’t. However, below are a few tried and true ways we have found that do work to remove a spray tan:

Lemon Juice and Water

This is probably one of the simplest methods to use for small spots that might look a little too dark. For example, this happens a lot if you don’t use a good amount of lotion as a barrier on dry areas of your skin such as elbows, knees and hands. Dipping a small cotton ball into a mixture of lemon juice and water, and blotting it on those problem areas is a sure way to correct it!

Windex

I know it sounds weird…but a lot of high profile spray tanning professionals swear by Windex to remove a spray tan. All you have to do is get a warm washcloth, spray a few sprays on Windex on it, and either blot or wipe your skin. The spray tan will be erased within seconds!

Toothpaste

This is also a trick that works well for smaller areas. If you have issues with a few spots on your body, toothpaste works great! The trick to this is to get a clean toothbrush, wet it and put toothpaste on it just as if you were to brush your teeth. Then, gently rub the brush in a circular motion over the problem areas.

Take a Bath

This trick is a classic one, and probably the easiest of them all. Simply draw yourself a warm bath and soak for at least 10-15 minutes. This will help soften up the top layer of your skin, making the spray tan easier to scrub off.

Selfie Tan Remover and Primer

Finally, we must say, our go-to product when it comes to removing a spray tan is Selfie’s Sunless Tan Remover and Primer. This product is great to use over your entire body to remove a spray tan, but also to prep your skin for an upcoming spray tan session. Simply apply it to the parts of the body of your choice, leave it be for 5 minutes, then hop in the shower. You can take an exfoliating mitt or a washcloth to scrub your skin and finalize the removal. We love this product and recommend it to all our clients. Not only that, but we also sell this product right in our studio!

And there you have it! Now, the next time you want to remove your spray tan, you’ll know exactly what to do. Happy Tanning!

Spray Tan Facts and Tips

Spray Tan Facts and Tips

When you’re thinking about getting a spray tan for the first time, there are a lot of unknowns. It’s normal to be hesitant about booking your first spray tan. In fact, a lot of people worry about the same things. Luckily, you truly have nothing to worry about… and to prove that, below are the answers to the top 5 most asked questions about getting a spray tan! (You’re welcome)

Am I Going To Turn Orange?

Okay, we had to address this one first, as it is THE single most asked question we get. The short answer is: no. The long answer is, at some salons, honestly, this might happen. However, at Bronze Beauty Spray Tanning, we use some of the top spray tanning solutions on the market. This gives us the ability to create a custom color just for you! With the variety of solutions we use, we can always produce very natural-looking tans. In addition, we even have access to additive color bases (violet, brown, and red) that give us even more customization capabilities to truly match you with the best color. And let me assure you, that color will never be orange!

How Long Will My Tan Last?

Typically, all spray tans last between 5-7 days. However, this all depends on how well you prepped your skin in advance, and how well you take care of your skin afterwards. At Bronze Beauty, we provide you with a detailed handout after your session with all the tips and tricks on how to make your tan last as long as possible. In addition, we also have a variety of products available for purchase in our studio. These products extend the life of your spray tan beyond even 7 days.

I’m Very Pale, Will a Spray Tan Work for Me?

This is another very popular question. The answer is similar to question #1, but just to reiterate… at our studio, we have so many different kinds of solutions. So, if you do have fairer skin, we would absolutely customize a lighter solution for you! We’ve had a lot of clients come in worried about this, and after their first session with us, they’ve become hooked! In fact, people with fairer skin tend to be some of our most loyal customers because they don’t want to be out in the sun (as they burn easily), or laying in a tanning bed to achieve the color they want. Spray tanning is the perfect option for people with pale skin!

When is the Best Day to Get a Spray Tan?

If you plan on booking a spray tan for a special event, such as a wedding or a dance, we typically recommend getting your tan done 2-3 days before your event! The reason behind this is because the solution takes up to 24 hours to fully develop on your skin. So, if you go out to your event the next day, the tan is actually still developing. While the tan is developing, your skin might be a little darker than you’re comfortable with, and the cosmetic bronzer (the top layer of the tan) is still shedding itself, and could potentially rub off onto your clothes. Also, the 3-4th day is when the color is set and will be at its prime. This is when you will look and feel your very best!

Can I Go Swimming with a Spray Tan?

Lastly, this is another very frequently asked question, especially in the summer time. A lot of people get sprayed right before they go on vacation, and it’s a real issue if they can’t go swimming. The good news is: you can go swimming with a spray tan! The only suggestion we would give is to wait until at least 48 hours after your session, as well as to make sure to lather up on sunscreen beforehand. Not only is sunscreen a great thing to use because you can still get burned with a spray tan, but it also creates a barrier between your spray tan and the chlorine. Chlorine can bleach your spray tan, so the more protection (and moisturization, in general) you can give your skin, the better!

And there you have it! We hope this helps overcome any previous doubts you might have had about spray tanning, and we hope to see you in our studio soon! Happy tanning!

Should I Get a Spray Tan for My Wedding?

1024 683 Sarah Rubino

Should I Get a Spray Tan for My Wedding?

So… you’re engaged (congrats!!) and you’re planning every last detail of the most important day of your life. You’ve found the dress, booked your glam squad, but you’re still seeking a way to achieve a sun-kissed glow. Only one thing seems to be holding you back: you’re scared. You’re scared of turning orange, looking too dark, or not looking like yourself. So, the question remains… should you get a spray tan before your big day? As expert spray tanning technicians at Bronze Beauty Spray Tanning, we’re here to tell you YES! And these are the reasons why:

Your Color Will Be Customized

At Bronze Beauty Spray Tanning, all of our solutions are customized with different color bases! This ensures that your skin will end up looking as dark, or as light as you want it to be. With these bases we have the ability to pull more dark tones, red tones, or even olive tone! The possibilities are essentially endless. The point being, you don’t need to worry about being too dark or too light. If you communicate with us about what you want, we have the resources to give you exactly what you’re looking for!

You Won’t Turn Orange

As we said before, because all of our solutions have different bases (brown, violet, red, olive, etc.) we know what solutions work best with lighter or darker skin tones. We never go too dark on someone who might have naturally fairer skin, because we know that would look unnatural on them. We truly customize our solutions to make sure that what we use on you will look GOOD on you!

Bring Your Bridesmaids & Get a Discount

If you’ve never had a spray tan party, you haven’t lived! Bring all your bridesmaids with you to get a discount on your spray tan! Whether it’s just a trial, or the tan for the big day, there’s nothing like having that bff support system to back you up, especially if it’s your first time.

Book a Trial Before the Real Deal

If you’ve never had a spray tan before and you want to try it out, we always recommend to brides that they book a trial about 3-4 weeks before their wedding. Another good idea is to book the trial around the time of your last wedding dress fitting. It’s always good to see exactly what your skin tone will look like in the wedding dress itself, and see if you like it.

You’ll Have an Experienced Spray Tan Tech

At Bronze Beauty Spray Tanning, we truly pride ourselves in being the best spray tanning salon in Pittsburgh. We’ve been in business for a little over 6 years, but in that seemingly short amount of time, we have sprayed thousands of clients… many of which have been brides! We’re a preferred vendor on Pittsburgh’s famous bridal blog, Burgh Brides (https://burghbrides.com/vendor-guide/beauty/bronze-beauty-spray-tanning/), and have received countless raving reviews from brides throughout the years. We know we have what it takes to give you that natural looking glow you’ve always dreamed of on the most important day of your life!

So, there you have it! Give us a call or message us on any of our social media platforms, and we would love to talk with you more about scheduling a bridal trial! We look forward to hearing from you. Happy Tanning!

What to Expect During a Spray Tan

1024 684 Sarah Rubino

What to Expect During a Spray Tan:

So you’ve finally booked a spray tan… and you’re super excited. But there’s still something about the experience that makes you nervous because, frankly, you don’t know what to expect. Well have no fear! Here’s exactly what to expect the day of your spray tan:

Undress (To Your Comfort Level)

When you first get to our spray tanning studio, your spray tan tech will greet you and show you to the tanning booth. Here, they’ll let you undress to your comfort level. For women, some choose to go topless, wear a bathing suit, a strapless bra and panties, or go completely nude! Remember not worry about what your spray tan tech thinks… they’ve seen it all! As for men, they can wear underwear, swim trunks, or take advantage of the complementary disposable boxers we have in our studio!

Put On Sticky Feet & Hair Net

At Bronze Beauty Spray Tanning, we provide complementary sticky feet and hair nets, so you don’t have to worry about bringing your own. The sticky feet prevent the bottoms of your feet from getting solution on them while in the tanning booth. In addition, the hair net keeps your hair out of your face and off your body, as well as protects your hair from getting any spray tanning solution in it.

We Apply a pH Balance Spray to Your Skin

The pH balance spray is also complementary at Bronze Beauty Spray Tanning! It helps prepare your skin for the spray tan, and, in turn, helps your spray tan to last longer!

We Apply Barrier Cream to Your Hands, Knees, and Elbows

The barrier cream applied before the spray tanning session moisturizes those particularly dry parts of the body, such as the hands, knees and elbows. The driest parts of the body tend to soak up more of the solution, which can cause your tan to look darker in those areas. Adding a little bit of a barrier and moisture to these specific areas just before the session helps to even out your tan, and make it look the most natural!

Let the Spray Tanning Begin!

At Bronze Beauty Spray Tanning, we spray with an HPVL machine and spray gun. This process is done by hand, and only takes about 5-7 minutes. Your spray tan tech will let you know what ways to turn, bend, and move to ensure you get 100% full body coverage.

We’ll Dry You Off

Once your color looks equal and even, your spray tan tech will turn off the gun and get out the drying hose. They will use this hose to dry you for about 1-2 minutes until your skin no longer feels wet.

You’re Done!

When your skin dries, you’re officially done! When putting your clothes back on, make sure you wear baggy/ loose-fitting clothing to ensure you don’t accidentally rub any of the solution off your body. Some of the areas of your skin may still feel slightly sticky, but you should feel completely dry within an hour.

And there you have it! Now that you know exactly what to expect during your spray tan session, there’s no need to worry. Enjoy and happy tanning!

The Best Products to Use After a Spray Tan

1024 683 Sarah Rubino

The Best Products to Use After a Spray Tan:

When it comes to taking care of your skin post-spray tan, we always say it’s important to use products that are paraben-free, sulfate-free, and free of any alcohols that may dry out the skin. A lot of people then say, “Okay, sounds great… so where can I find such products?” Well, it’s your lucky day, because we are about to s-p-e-l-l it out for you!

 1. Raw Sugar Body Wash

Raw Sugar bath and body products are an excellent option for your post-spray tan care. As a sulfate free, paraben free, dye-free, plant-derived and naturally sourced body wash, you can’t get much better!! We would highly recommend this product line to any of our clients.

2. Shea Moisture Body Wash + Lotion

Shea Moisture is also a great brand to use after your spray tan! In both their body wash and their body lotion products, they only ever use natural, organic ingredients… namely certified organic Shea Butter. It’s a perfect combination of products to look into, especially because moisturizing the skin post-spray tan ensures your spray tan will last longer.

3. Caress Shower Foam

The new Caress Shower Foam is a relatively new product from the Caress brand. As advertised, it’s light, airy, and surprisingly all-natural… making it perfect for post-spray tan usage! And, as bonus, all their scents are heavenly!

4. Specialty Products

Bronze Beauty Spray Tanning also carries other specialty products designed specifically for the purpose of ensuring a long-lasting spray tan. These products work best for both extending and building upon your sunless tan:

  • Sunstyle Catwalk Body Wash
  • Sunstyle Catwalk Sunless Tan Extending Lotion
  • Hempz Lotion
  • So Naughty Nude Body Wash
  • AYU Moisturizing Lotion
  • Amir Coconut Oil Lotion

Black List:

While talking about all the products you want to use after your spray tan, it’s also very important to remember the products you don’t want to use, as well. Make sure while taking care of your skin post-spray tan, you avoid the following products:

  • Dove or Dial Soap
  • Bath & Body Works Products
  • Victoria’s Secret Products
  • Curel Lotion
  • Anti-Aging Products
  • Retin-A Medicated Products
  • Toners containing alcohols or witch hazel
  • Anti-Acne Products
  • Harsh Makeup Removers
  • Depilatory Hair Removal Products (Nair, Veet, Neet, etc.)
  • Body Hair Bleach
  • Perfume or Fragrance (when sprayed directly on the skin)

With all this knowledge, you will be able to be proactive in taking care of your spray tan by using the most natural products to protect it, and avoiding the “black list” products that won’t! Happy tanning!

How to Get a Spray Tan to Last Longer

1024 683 Sarah Rubino

How to Get a Spray Tan to Last Longer:

So, you’ve finally gotten a spray tan… now what? Similarly to how you prepped your skin beforehand, it’s important to remember certain tips for after your spray tan, as well! After all, the more you take care of your skin after you’ve been sprayed, the longer your tan will last!

Wait 8-10 Hours Before Showering

Try to refrain from showering for the first 8-10 hours after your spray tan session. As with all DHA products, sunless color begins showing development approximately 4 hours after the application, and continues to darken for up to 24 hours. So, if you shower at all during the first 24 hours, remember to use a WARM WATER RINSE ONLY! The use of soap can inhibit the full development of DHA color. During your first shower, refrain from using loofahs, wash cloths, or anything that could scrub away your tan. And finally, when drying off after any shower following your spray tan, make sure to pat your skin dry… do not rub your skin with a towel, as this may cause some of the solution to come off. Also, after your first shower, we recommend you use a mild pH balanced lotion to extend the life of your tan.

Remember, cosmetic instant bronzers will wash away during the first shower. Don’t be scared when you see some color coming off your skin during the first rinse, it’s supposed to!

NOTE: If you have gotten a rapid spray tan treatment as opposed to a normal spray tan, remember that you only need to wait 2-6 hours before your first shower. The warm water rinse rule, however, still applies, but you should refrain from using lotion during the first 24 hours.

Avoid Rainy Weather

Try to avoid any contact with rain or any other form of water until after your initial shower. Water contact stops the tanning process immediately. If your skin comes in contact with water before the tan has fully developed, it could end up look patchy.

When Showering, Use Mild pH Balanced Shower Products

When showering post-spray tan, make sure to use only mild pH balanced body soaps and products. Any products that have exfoliating beads, lotions, or a high pH balance will strip away your sunless color. If you don’t have any products that are mild pH balanced, or you’re unsure, we carry a host of different brands and products at Bronze Beauty Spray Tanning. Make sure to ask your spray tan tech after your session, and she will refer you to our recommended products.

Do Not Shave Or Wax for 24-48 Hours

If you must shave or wax after the first 24-48 hours, make sure to use a brand new, sharp razor to reduce removing any old or dead skin cells. Remember that the spray tan solution has attached itself to these skin cells, so the more you shave, the more you’ll strip your tan.

Avoid Chlorinated Pools

It’s always best to try to stay away from chlorinated pools, spas, saunas, and excessive heat, as this will dramatically accelerate the fading process of your spray tan. Chlorine, especially, is a form of bleach, which promotes the accelerated process of removing the tan.

That being said, there exist ways to get around this rule. In fact, if you’re going on vacation and simply cannot or do not want to avoid the water, one tip we have found is to apply a thick layer of waterproof sunscreen to your body before entering the pool. This helps to block the chlorine from soaking into your skin and will help protect the life of your tan!

Extend & Build Color by Applying Lotion Daily

Applying lotion (mild pH balanced, of course) daily after your spray tan will not only help keep your skin soft and smooth and therefore extend the life of your tan, but also can help build onto the color you have already achieved.

To wrap up, taking care of your skin after your spray tan session is just as important as the days leading up to your appointment. Remembering these few simple tips will not only help extend the life of your tan, but also will help you to look and feel your best for the days to come!
