What to Expect During a Spray Tan Session:

So you’ve finally booked a spray tan… and you’re super excited. But there’s still something about the experience that makes you nervous because, frankly, you don’t know what to expect. Well have no fear! Here’s exactly what to expect the day of your spray tan:

 

Undress (To Your Comfort Level)

When you first get to our spray tanning studio, your spray tan tech will greet you and show you to the tanning booth. Here, they’ll let you undress to your comfort level. For women, some choose to go topless, wear a bathing suit, a strapless bra and panties, or go completely nude! Remember not worry about what your spray tan tech thinks… they’ve seen it all! As for men, they can wear underwear, swim trunks, or take advantage of the complementary disposable boxers we have in our studio!

 

Put On Sticky Feet & Hair Net

At Bronze Beauty Spray Tanning, we provide complementary sticky feet and hair nets, so you don’t have to worry about bringing your own. The sticky feet prevent the bottoms of your feet from getting solution on them while in the tanning booth. In addition, the hair net keeps your hair out of your face and off your body, as well as protects your hair from getting any spray tanning solution in it.

 

We Apply a pH Balance Spray to Your Skin

The pH balance spray is also complementary at Bronze Beauty Spray Tanning! It helps prepare your skin for the spray tan, and, in turn, helps your spray tan to last longer!

 

We Apply Barrier Cream to Your Hands, Knees, and Elbows

The barrier cream applied before the spray tanning session moisturizes those particularly dry parts of the body, such as the hands, knees and elbows. The driest parts of the body tend to soak up more of the solution, which can cause your tan to look darker in those areas. Adding a little bit of a barrier and moisture to these specific areas just before the session helps to even out your tan, and make it look the most natural!

 

Let the Spray Tanning Begin!

At Bronze Beauty Spray Tanning, we spray with an HPVL machine and spray gun. This process is done by hand, and only takes about 5-7 minutes. Your spray tan tech will let you know what ways to turn, bend, and move to ensure you get 100% full body coverage.

 

We’ll Dry You Off

Once your color looks equal and even, your spray tan tech will turn off the gun and get out the drying hose. They will use this hose to dry you for about 1-2 minutes until your skin no longer feels wet.

 

You’re Done!

When your skin dries, you’re officially done! When putting your clothes back on, make sure you wear baggy/ loose-fitting clothing to ensure you don’t accidentally rub any of the solution off your body. Some of the areas of your skin may still feel slightly sticky, but you should feel completely dry within an hour.

Post Spray Tan Tips:

So, you’ve finally gotten a spray tan… now what? Similarly to how you prepped your skin beforehand, it’s important to remember certain tips for after your spray tan, as well! After all, the more you take care of your skin after you’ve been sprayed, the longer your tan will last!

 

Wait 8-10 Hours Before Showering

Try to refrain from showering for the first 8-10 hours after your spray tan session. As with all DHA products, sunless color begins showing development approximately 4 hours after the application, and continues to darken for up to 24 hours. So, if you shower at all during the first 24 hours, remember to use a WARM WATER RINSE ONLY! The use of soap can inhibit the full development of DHA color. During your first shower, refrain from using loofahs, wash cloths, or anything that could scrub away your tan. And finally, when drying off after any shower following your spray tan, make sure to pat your skin dry… do not rub your skin with a towel, as this may cause some of the solution to come off. Also, after your first shower, we recommend you use a mild pH balanced lotion to extend the life of your tan.

Remember, cosmetic instant bronzers will wash away during the first shower. Don’t be scared when you see some color coming off your skin during the first rinse, it’s supposed to!

NOTE: If you have gotten a rapid spray tan treatment as opposed to a normal spray tan, remember that you only need to wait 2-6 hours before your first shower. The warm water rinse rule, however, still applies, but you should refrain from using lotion during the first 24 hours.

 

Avoid Rainy Weather

Try to avoid any contact with rain or any other form of water until after your initial shower. Water contact stops the tanning process immediately. If your skin comes in contact with water before the tan has fully developed, it could end up look patchy.

 

When Showering, Use Mild pH Balanced Shower Products

When showering post-spray tan, make sure to use only mild pH balanced body soaps and products. Any products that have exfoliating beads, lotions, or a high pH balance will strip away your sunless color. If you don’t have any products that are mild pH balanced, or you’re unsure, we carry a host of different brands and products at Bronze Beauty Spray Tanning. Make sure to ask your spray tan tech after your session, and she will refer you to our recommended products.

Do Not Shave Or Wax for 24-48 Hours

If you must shave or wax after the first 24-48 hours, make sure to use a brand new, sharp razor to reduce removing any old or dead skin cells. Remember that the spray tan solution has attached itself to these skin cells, so the more you shave, the more you’ll strip your tan.

 

Avoid Chlorinated Pools

It’s always best to try to stay away from chlorinated pools, spas, saunas, and excessive heat, as this will dramatically accelerate the fading process of your spray tan. Chlorine, especially, is a form of bleach, which promotes the accelerated process of removing the tan.

That being said, there exist ways to get around this rule. In fact, if you’re going on vacation and simply cannot or do not want to avoid the water, one tip we have found is to apply a thick layer of waterproof sunscreen to your body before entering the pool. This helps to block the chlorine from soaking into your skin and will help protect the life of your tan!

 

Extend & Build Color by Applying Lotion Daily

Applying lotion (mild pH balanced, of course) daily after your spray tan will not only help keep your skin soft and smooth and therefore extend the life of your tan, but also can help build onto the color you have already achieved.

 

To wrap up, taking care of your skin after your spray tan session is just as important as the days leading up to your appointment. Remembering these few simple tips will not only help extend the life of your tan, but also will help you to look and feel your best for the days to come!

If you follow Jamie on social media, make sure to wish her a Happy Birthday today. We met Jamie back in March or April I would say. We sprayed her for her first show ever and I am so glad she is part of the BBST Family. Jamie is the sweetest, down-to-earth girl and has a huge passion for fitness. I sent over some questions for Jamie to answer, and here they are…..

  1. When did you decide you wanted to compete in shows?

I first decided to start training for a show in September of 2014.  I had come a long way in my own transformation, but I felt sort of stuck and complacent.  I wanted that extra push and challenge for my fitness level, and I thought competing would really give me that drive.  I was actually approached by my spin instructor (fellow BBST rep, Corinne) who asked me if I ever considered doing a show, and that’s how this whole thing started!

  1. Who is your role model?

I have several role models, both personal friends (like Sheri Vucick, Jessica Lyle and Corinne Chalovich), but my ULTIMATE fitness and life role model is Chalene Johnson.  I credit my entire transformation to her.  I found her on my own when I was researching new fitness programs (I’m a huge fan of at-home fitness programs), and I found TurboFire.  Chalene and TurboFire changed my life.  Not only is Chalene one of the most positive, upbeat, FUNNY, and real people in the industry, but she stands for more than just fitness.  She stands for living your purpose, staying true to you.  She is a New York Times Best Selling Author, and she believes in and stands for everything that I do.  I strive to be more like her every day, and I’m finally taking the right steps to get there.

Sarah: I love that fact that girls motivate each other instead of bringing one another down or competing against each other. Girl Power!! 😉

  1. What bodybuilder do you look up to and why?

There are so many inspirational bodybuilders in the industry, and I honestly think they are all worthy of being mentioned because this industry is HARSH.  If I have to pick one, though, it would be Heidi Somers (buffbunny).  She has a similar story to mine in that she found fitness on her own and started out on her own because she couldn’t afford a trainer.  She’s now on her way to earning her pro card in bikini, and she shares all of her workouts and meals on her YouTube channel, for free, because she wants to help others.  That, to me, is someone undoubtedly worth looking up to.

Sarah: That’s awesome that she is willing to share that information for free. Shows she really cares about people and wants to help them! 

  1. When was your first show and what did you learn from that show?

My first show was in March of 2015, and I truthfully did it on a whim.  If you want to hear more about why I did that, you can check out my fitness story that’s posted to mine and Jess’s YouTube channel (Jamie and Jess on YouTube).  I had just broken off a long distance relationship and I needed something to focus on.  The show was 3 weeks out and I somehow managed to pull it together, but it was definitely a learning experience.  I learned that sleep actually is important, and the rebound effect post show is a REAL thing.  Competing is way more of a mental game than a physical one.  The workouts are easy, but it’s your mind that you have to convince that you can actually do this.

Sarah: OK – so I should change that date in the beginning, because this was the show we met Jamie :-). And for it being her first show, she looked and did AMAZING!!!! 

  1. When you are prepping for a show – what is a typical day like for you?

My competing days are over, and now I’m focusing more on fitness modeling and sharing my story to ultimately open up a business focused on health, fitness, and wellness to help others feel good about themselves.  Prepping for a photoshoot is a little bit different than prepping for a fitness competition.  When you’re prepping for a show, it really doesn’t get too rigid until about 4 weeks out.  Then, the meals are all timed, very specific to your goals, and the workouts can be long and strenuous.  It isn’t easy!  But if you really focus on the end goal, on getting to the stage and WHY you’re doing this, then it gets easier.  You have to have a “why,” though, otherwise you’ll just go crazy.

Prepping for a photoshoot, for me at least, is pretty relaxed.  I eat a very clean diet to begin with, and I eat according to when my body tells me it’s hungry.  I stick to clean, whole, natural foods – nothing processed or artificial, no fast foods or anything like that.  I do eat out occasionally, but when I do I stick to the clean stuff.  I work out 6 days a week – Sundays are for rest.  Right now, I’m recovering from surgery and overtraining (if you want to know more about that, visit jamieshelly.com and see “Exercise: How Much is Too Much and When You Should Cut Back”).  I lift 3 days a week, and do cardio 5 days a week.  On days that I lift, cardio is much shorter and HIIT style training.  I don’t let myself work out for more than an hour and a half a day.  30-90 minutes is more than enough.  The week before a shoot, I will deplete a little bit, but nothing like how you would for a fitness competition.

I believe in living a balanced life, and stick to the 80/20 rule.

Sarah: I know we are looking forward to you opening your own business! That would be awesome!! 

  1. What is your favorite cheat meal?

If you had asked me this 2 months ago, I would have said a jar of peanut butter!!  I wish I was kidding!  I was addicted.  I had to cut it out of my diet for a while, but now I let myself have it once a week and don’t go overboard.  Right now, I don’t really do cheat meals because I don’t feel that I need them.  Like I said before, I live a balanced life and enjoy everything in moderation.  If I’m really going to splurge though… it would be on a huge Mexican meal – a drenched burrito with tons of re-fried beans and a HUGE frozen margarita with LOTS of tequila.  If you make me that, I’ll marry you 😉

  1. What motivates you?

Fitness and health is truly my passion.  I have a unique journey and I want to share that with the world, which is why I started jamieshelly.com and am chasing my dreams to help others who might have had some similar struggles to me.  I’m motivated every day by my journey – where I started to where I am now.  I’m so blessed to be able to exercise every day.  I’m healthy and I’m so thankful that God gave me the ability to use my body in an active way.  Many people aren’t fortunate enough, and that’s what gets me out of bed each day and up in to my fitness loft.  Also, exercise gives me such a great feeling when I’m done – it’s an instant mood booster!  If I don’t feel like working out, I always make myself start for at least 5 minutes.  If, after those 5 minutes I’m still not feeling it, then I’ll walk away and come back later.  You have to listen to your body and honor that, but usually the 5 minutes passes and I never end up stopping.

Sarah: I can’t listen to my body, every time I would want to work out, it says “Sarah, what are you thinking, go grab some chips and sit your butt down” ;-). 

  1. What is the best advice you can give to someone who wants to start competing?

Competing is a serious decision.  It’s a sacrifice.  It’s an investment.  You have to be able to give it your absolute 100% dedication and commitment; there is no half-assing when it comes to competing.  The first thing I would say is to figure out why you want to compete.  Are you doing it to impress someone else, to get revenge?  Or are you doing it for you and your own happiness?  I hope it’s the latter, because that is the only way to do it.

The desire to compete and to win has to come from within yourself.  There will be hard days, and there will be harder days.  But if you do it for the right reasons, for you, then you will be successful!  Always know, it doesn’t matter what place you get, or if you even place at all.  All of the hard work that you put in is what counts.  Don’t compete for a trophy or for a title.  Compete for the experience, to challenge yourself and to grow and to achieve something absolutely incredible.  You’ll always win that way.

The number one thing I always say to people who ask me for advice is this: you are perfect just the way you are.  You are already enough – you don’t have to prove yourself to anyone.  If you go in to any challenge with this mentality, then you’ve already won.  You are enough, and you will always be enough.

  1. What is your favorite part of the body to train?

Shoulders.  I have always loved working shoulders – and abs!

  1. What is your favorite exercise?

Do you want to know a secret?  I am a cardio queen!  I LOVE cardio, and I know it’s crazy but it’s what gets me feeling absolutely amazing.  This is what got me in to trouble with over training, so I have to be careful with it.  But anything cardio, spinning, cardio machines like the stair master or all motion trainer, TurboFire (I think this is where it started); really anything that gets my heart pumping and my skin sweating!

  1. Any other comments you would like to make?

Fitness will always be my passion and my purpose, and even though I’m not a competitor anymore, I still use Sarah and BBST for every photo shoot that I have.  They really are the best in the bizz here in Pittsburgh, and I wouldn’t trust anyone else!  If you want to learn more about me and my journey, visit my blog at jamieshelly.com

What to Expect After my Spray Tanning Session

Hi! I am back – I know, it’s been a long time since I’ve done a blog post, but it’s spray tanning season and well, everyone wants sprayed now!

When getting a spray tan, the way it turns out is the responsibility of both the spray technician and the client. In another post, we talked about the steps to prep your skin for your appointment. In this post, we will talk about how to keep the tan lasting long and fade evenly.

As soon as you are done with your spray tan, you have a beautiful glow. As the day or night goes on, your spray tan gets darker and darker. The reason it gets darker, is because the DHA is reacting to the skins amino acids. Once the DHA hits those, it starts turning brown and starts to develop. DHA starts to develop on the skin within 4 hours. I always tell my clients to leave the solution on for as long as they can up to 24 hours. I know, it’s a long time to go without showering. If you do get a shower before the 24 hours, you MUST do a warm water rinse and DO NOT use any soaps or body washes. You want to make sure you allow enough time for the tan to develop on your skin. Once you have waited your 24 hours, you want to hop in the shower and rinse off the cosmetic bronzer. “But Sarah, all the solution on my skin just went down the drain!” While that may seem like the case, it is not. What you are seeing go down the drain is the cosmetic bronzer. Under that cosmetic bronzer is the good stuff! The stuff that will stay on your skin for about 5-7 days.

Once you have your first shower after the spray tan, you want to make sure you keep your skin moisturized. This is the most important tip I can give you. Personally, I tend to have really dry skin and if I do not put lotion on my skin days after I get a spray tan, my tan will only last 3 days at the most. So, take it from my experience, PUT THAT LOTION ON ALL THE TIME!!! Don’t be lazy like me. I’ve had clients who told me their tan lasted 2 weeks, some even 3! Of course it won’t be as dark the 2nd or 3rd week, but you can still see a little bit of the tan. Keeping your skin moisturized also helps with it fading evenly. The solution only attaches to the top layer of your skin and once that top layer exfoliates, so does the tan. If that top layer is well moisturized, it will take longer for the tan to fade.

Some moisturizers to keep away from when getting a spray tan are ones with sulfates, heavy scents, citrus product in it, or something with shimmer! Coconut Oil has been known to work well with a spray tan as it keeps the tan looking radiant and helps it last a little longer and also helps with fading. Same goes for Cocoa butter lotions. The more basic the lotion, the better! BBST also sells lotions to help extend and keep the tan lasting longer. At your next appointment, make sure to ask about these lotions!

A lot of people do become addicted to spray tanning. It’s healthy, quick, and you see the results right away. If you want a glow all the time, I recommend getting a spray tan every 5-7 days. Once you do this 4 times in a row, it’s best to wait about 10 days or so to let the tan completely exfoliate off and then you can start all over again. You may even want to get a tough exfoliate to help get the rest of the tan off. This will allow your skin to get a little break, so that you can start with a clean slate.

So next time you get a spray tan, make sure you have the proper lotion to apply after so your tan lasts long!

What Can I Expect When I Make an Appointment with Bronze Beauty?

The majority of my clients never had a spray tan of any kind before. Or if they did, they had one in a booth and had a terrible experience. I always try and educate my clients on what they can expect during their spray tanning session. So in this blog, I will give you the sneak peak of what to expect when you get a spray tan with Bronze Beauty.

As soon as I (or one of our spray techs) enters your home, we find the best place to do the spray tan. I recommend a place that is well lit and can accommodate a 8ft tent and also has an outlet. (see picture below of my tent!) I’ve sprayed in every room and area of a house before. The bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, basement, game room, you name it – we can fit in! Once I set up my equipment, (this usually takes about 5-7 minutes) we start the session. The most common question I get (besides, will I turn Orange?) is what do I wear during a session? I leave that up to the client and whatever their comfort level is. I want this to be as comfortable as possible. Most people go topless and have bottoms, or they wear a strapless top of some kind with bottoms, I even have some people go nude. It’s all up to you! Once we put the hair net and barrier cream on, I spray you down with a pre mist spray. This pre mist will help moisturize your skin and really soak in the tan to make it attach to the skin. After the pre mist, comes the real stuff. I spray whatever shade we selected for you and cover the body. After the actually spray is on you, I then take a post mist and do one last light spray. This helps make the tan pop and also helps with fading. After that last spray, I dry you off and you are good to put your clothes back on! ALWAYS REMEMBER TO WEAR DARK LOOSE FITTING CLOTHES after your spray tanning session! Tight clothes will make the tan smudge or come off. We don’t want that now, do we?? In about 2-4 hours you will notice your color getting darker and will continue to darken as the day/night goes on. Once you get your first shower, that cosmetic bronzer will wash off and you are left with a beautiful tan!

Believe it or not, the whole spray process takes less than 10 minutes. So that means, I am in and out of your house in less than 20 minutes. It’s that quick!! Amazing, huh? 😉
